New Build for School of Art- Montemurlo
The planning of this school holds up the urban organization delicate area of Montemurlo, heavily degradated from uncontrolled expansion of industrial zones. The new school was realized in cooperation with Prof. Sergio Los and marks a sign that it’s different from the pre-existing continuity. It’s unconstrained from the Urban pattern and through a 45° rotation gets a new and optimal solar exposure. The solution is bioclimatic and allows the development of various themes to reduce energy consumption and make sustainable the intervention including natural lighting, radiation control, well-thought windows openings, microclimate control, photovoltaic panels on roofs properly oriented. The space arrangement and the urban retreat simulation reflect the project’s civic value which twists through a long internal and figurative road: the connective spine. Both the extremities simulate squares (more public service compared to the classrooms) and house the library and the auditorium. The “S” shaped school creates two concavities which accommodate two large green courtyards that become the outdoor extension of classrooms and labs. A triangle-shaped courts leads open facades to the south and east; the other one leads sheltered facades to north and west. Different places/living spaces that evoke the citizen spaces and stimulate social life, like the entrance porch, the courts and the large areas of library and auditorium, derive from Mediterranean tradition.
